The MidNite Solar lightning arrestor is in the final stages of testing at ETL. Making an arrestor such as the MidNite SPD’s is no simple task, nor is it cheap. We have had many surprises along the way on this project, but all is looking great for an ETL listing to UL1449 rev3 in the very near future. The MidNite arrestor is a great replacement for Delta arrestors that have been the mainstay of the industry for many years. A very interesting comparison between the MidNite arrestor and other arrestors will be forthcoming once the product is listed. This comparison should prove to be a real eye opener.

The UL standards have changed and the old standbys will soon no longer be legal to install. The MidNite surge arrestors are designed to clamp surge voltage to safe levels for sensitive electronics. Other arrestors do not even begin to clamp surge voltages until 7000 or 8000 volts. What are they protecting? Not much. Be aware that numerous arrestors are about to flood the market. They for the most part posses 1/8 the strength of the MidNite arrestors and have no visible indication of performance. Most of these new arrestors require din rail mounting where they WILL blow up and will then be out of sight while they are protecting nothing. We do not have these issues. The exact release date depends on ETL’s testing.

The basic design of the DELTA silicon oxide varistor (SOV) arrestor is a pair of metal electrodes separated by a silicon oxide compound. Under normal conditions, the silicon oxide is a good insulator so that no line current flows between the electrodes to ground. When an excessively high voltage occurs on the electrodes, the high energy electrical field ionizes the silicon oxide, changing it from a compound to silicon separate from oxygen. Since the silicon ion is a good conductor, the high energy current is conducted to ground. When the voltage falls toward normal, the silicon and oxygen recombine, forming silicon oxide and shutting off the conduction.

MC4 connectors are desined to prevent accidental disconnect under load, which can cause danger to both a person or the components. MC4 connectors are fastened securely onto 10 guage outdoor insulated cable, available in lengths of 15', 30', 50' or custom length. Simply cut the cable in half and wire ends into your PV disconnect or other components.
