Rapid City Journal: Hybrid wind-solar unit brings green power to BadlandsWALL – The hybrid wind-solar energy system at the Pinnacles Entrance of Badlands National Park is a sign of what Wolf Schwarz hopes will be many energy-efficient things to come. The hybrid will be flexible enough to provide power even under changeable environmental conditions.
"When the wind blows, the turbine is producing power. And when the sun is shining, the photovoltaic is producing power,” said Schwarz, facilities manager at the park. "It makes the system more reliable to have a hybrid system. Although we have sunny weather in summer, we have lulls at night. And we have wind at night that produces energy.”
The system is designed to do that, as well as pay for itself over time in energy savings to the park. Power generated beyond the needs of the Pinnacles complex will flow into the energy grid, reducing the park’s electric bill through West River Electric Association. Read more...
